1. a personal diary or record of proceedings, kept in reverse chronological order and offered up to the World Wide Web.
2. such a diary, written in public; a log of one’s journey through software, projects and experiments — see below.
Etym.: web (the World Wide Web) + log (a ship’s journal; a regular record of events). Coined as weblog by Jorn Barger in 1997; playfully re-split into we blog by Peter Merholz in 1999 — whence the verb to blog: to keep one’s diary in the open.
